The Germans(Axis) are one of the two playable factions, along with the US (Allies) available in Heroes and Generals and their two starting capitals on the campaign map are Berlin and Rome.

Description

The Axis powers, also known as the Axis alliance, Axis nations, Axis countries, or the Axis, were the nations that fought in the Second World War against the Allied forces. The Axis powers were united by their opposition to the Western world and the Soviet Union. They described their goals as breaking the hegemony of plutocratic-capitalist Western powers and defending civilization from communism.

The Axis grew out of the Anti-Comintern Pact, an anti-communist treaty signed by Germany and Japan in 1936. Italy joined the Pact in 1937. The "Rome–Berlin Axis" became a military alliance in 1939 under the Pact of Steel, with the Tripartite Pact of 1940 leading to the integration of the military aims of Germany and its two treaty-bound allies.

History

After WWI the German Empire collapsed and the fledging German Republic had major flaws. The country was bankrupt and suffered greatly from the harsh 1919 Treaty of Versailles which severely impended the German economy. In attempts to pay off debt the the German Government printed new money however this lead to hyper inflation causing extreme poverty among the German population who were already at breaking point after the Great War. The Nationalist Socialist Party, the Nazi Party used this desperation as a platform to gain power. They persuaded large numbers of the German populace by channeling peoples hatred formed from despair into anti racial and political hatred. Hitler and his party used this hatred to win over voters.

In 1932 the Nazi party did well enough in the elections to enter into power in coalition with the German National Peoples party of which the president appointed Hitler as Chancellor of Germany. The Nazi party then went onto take control indirectly of most organisations by placing Nazis in power of these organisations, Eventually the army and the churches were the only non Nazi controlled areas in Germany. In early 1933 Hitler used a fire in the Reichstag started by a Dutch communist as an excuse to begin persecuting large numbers of Nazi opposition giving the Nazi party a significantly easier time in spreading their influence. In March the Enabling Act was passed, by refusing the right to vote to many cabinet members, giving Hitler almost complete power over the German Government and was even allowed to defy the Constitution. Following this Hitler dissolved the other political parties and the State governments ending Centuries of Federalistic rule over Germany.

Hitler saw the current dire situation of the German Economy and set to begin to solve the many issues it faced. Public work projects put millions into work, in 1934 alone 1.7 million gained work in this manner. When the President died in August 1934 Hitler became Furher as well as Chancellor, head of government and state. This made Germany a real totalitarian regime. People did however rejoice in the fact that Hitler had solved the mass unrest and the economy of Germany. In this sense Hitler fixed a very broken Germany.

Hitler in 1935 began a massive rearmament program to rearm the German Army. Britain especially agreed with Germany in fears shared all over Europe of the growing USSR which threatened the very nature of western rule. Saarland voted to rejoin Germany and the Rheinland demilitarised zone was reoccupied by the German military. Hitler then began to create the Axis powers combining Fascist Italy and the heavily militarised Japan. Italy had been previously against Germany especially over the German wishes to annex Austria. Now italy was in support of Germany Austria peacefully invaded through the Anschluss thus starting WWII.

Germany started with invading Poland which flung Europe into war. With the support of the USSR, Poland fell quickly to the German Blitzkrieg Tactics. Germany then turned its ambitions Westwards. In the Spring of 1940 Hitler Unleashed the German war machine upon the Lowlands, France and the British Expeditionary force. Due to poor command, the German army forced France to surrender in a mere 6 weeks. British Forces fell back to the Channel and retreated across it. Hitler wanted to invade Britain as soon as possible but lacked the necessary control of the sky's. After the bloody battle of Britain, Hitler turned his gaze towards his Primary goal, Russia. It is also known that both Hitler and Stalin separately were planning to attack each other in 1941. The news of Red Army concentrations near the border led to Hitler engaging in a Flucht nach vorn ("flight forward"-i.e. responding to a danger by charging on rather than retreating). The German invasion of the USSR was to be known as Operation Barbarossa. Hitler had amassed large invading force, German army numbered around 3 million men, 4,000 tanks and several thousand planes, against 5 million Soviet troops, over 20,000 tanks and 40,000 planes. Sweeping across Russia and reaching Moscow by Winter, The Germans had forced the Russian army back into its heart land. Though the Germans where poised to take Moscow, Hitler had failed to see the oncoming winter. Thousands died from Frostbite. The Russians mounted a counter attack and forced the Germans back only a few miles along the Moscow Front. This Stalemate angered Hitler so he ordered the Wehrmacht to take Stalingrad. He saw this as a rallying point for the Soviets and a symbol of Stalin. Hitler ordered Army group south to take the city. The Army group numbered around 900,000 Soldiers. The Russians and Germans Fought a bloody battle for the city causing casualties of around a million men over all. The Germans where forced to retreat. Faslling back to the Region around the city of Kursk, the Germans and Russian dug in waiting for the other to make a move.

At the same time, Rommel and the Desert Korps where advancing through North Africa to take Egypt, One of Britain's Colonies and the site of the Suez canal.Several major battles where fought here, the most famous of them was El Alamien. The Defeat here meant the Germans were forced to retreat and continued to retreat all the way back to Tunisia where the Americans had started their advance. The Allies drove the Germans into the sea and forced them back into Italy and Sicily. This defeat caused Hitler to Divert soldiers that were on there way to the Eastern front to try and Defend Italy. This meant that the German Assault on Kursk lacked major amounts of men and supplies. Even though this came into affect, Kursk (Labeled Operation Citadel) Became known as the largest Tank battle in History.

Hitler hugely underestimated the Soviets again but this time it was the Beginning of the end. The Allies where advancing through Italy and Japan was taking a beating. As the war entered into 1944 Hitler and his commanders used all weapons of war at their disposal. In this year some of the most deadly and advanced weapons of the war where unleashed upon the allies. These included the Gigantic Tiger II and the MP44, But even these could not stem the Allied onslaught. After D-Day it was clear to Hitler that the Germans would lose the war. He carried on none the less. Operation Market Garden Brought the western allies closer to the Rhine and nearly over it. In the East the soviets reached the Oder and prepared for the last assault on the Heart of the Third Reich. Hitler launched the last full counter attack of the war, The Battle of the Bulge. The Germans failed to secure their objectives and the attacks failed. The war was coming to its final days as the Allies pressed into Germany. As Zhukovs Third guard army led the attack on the Capital, the war was nearly over. Hitler committed Suicide on April the 30th. Berlin fell on the second of May. The Germans still fought on in vain. The war was finally over on the 8th of May 1945.

Strategy

The Axis in real life and in game is not good for Direct Combat because they lack of short-medium range weapons. Therefore there should always be around 2-3 soldiers behind the attack group to support the attack. The Axis are good at long range sniping and medium range support. The Axis are best in the assault jeeps as they can carry a many soldiers at high speed to flank the enemy. The best attack strategy for an assault is flanking and surrounding the enemy. It is advised that the best course of action while playing as the Germans would be to Use their superior Medium and heavy tanks. The Germans also make excellent riflemen and Snipers. Players playing as the Germans may find them selves outgunned at close range so it is advised to keep your distance and pick off your enemies from afar.

Weapons

Main Article: Axis Weapons

The Germans from start to finish had a massive technological advantage in the field of weaponry. Their weapons lived up the well known German stereotype of perfectionism and extremely efficient, this however often meant that the weapons created by the Germans were created in extremely small numbers due to manufacture time and cost. A prime example of this was the MP38, exactly the same as the MP40 however was not made of sheet metal and was instead made on many smaller parts which made it extremely expensive to manufacture meaning that in the early parts of the war, Poland for example there were extremely few around. This did lead to the Germans making use of captured weaponry such as the Austrian Steyr MP34 and use of their older MP35s and MP18/28s.

Vehicles

Main Article: Axis Vehicles

Much like the German weaponry the vehicles created by the Germans were excellent but in too few numbers. The situation was exactly the same in the case of the Tiger II which outclassed all the tanks in it's category however due to its tiny numbers the soviet T-34 s overrun the Germans. The German tanks did initially lack firepower when confronted by Czech and French tanks of the same class. The superiority of Czech light tanks led to them being adopted in the German army. Although the Lighter German tanks may not be able to match some of the larger and more advanced Allied tanks, the German heavy and medium tanks make up for their lighter counterparts. Germany has some of the most advanced vehicles in the game ranging from the Infamous Stug 3 to the Legendary King Tiger.
